movie reference for Agoraphobia animation

1)Christopher Hinton - Nibbles (2003)

Matthew give me a suggestion. The short film I showed below is about nibble. Mat said it will be good if I can make my film have the exaggeration that showed in the film below. Learn how they show people eating. I need the energy in my film. The film is very simple, but it has energy.

Agoraphobia-from wikipedia

Agoraphobia (from Greek ἀγορά, "marketplace"; and φόβος/φοβία, -phobia) is an anxiety disorder defined as a morbid fear of having a panic attack or panic-like symptoms in a situation from which it is perceived to be difficult (or embarrassing) to escape. These situations can include, but are not limited to, wide-open spaces, crowds, or uncontrolled social conditions. Alternatively, social anxiety problems may also be an underlying cause. As a result, sufferers of agoraphobia avoid public and/or unfamiliar places, especially large, open spaces such as shopping malls or airports from which they cannot easily escape if they have a panic attack. In severe cases, the sufferer may become confined to his or her home, unable to leave their safe haven.
Although mostly thought to be a fear of public places, it is now believed that agoraphobia develops as a complication of panic attacks.[1] However, there is evidence that the implied one-way causal relationship between spontaneous panic attacks and agoraphobia in DSM-IV may be incorrect.[2] Onset is usually between ages 20 and 40 years and more common in women.[3] Approximately 3.2 million, or about 2.2%, of adults in the US between the ages of 18 and 54, suffer from agoraphobia.[4] Agoraphobia can account for approximately 60% of phobias.[5] Agoraphobia, as studies have shown, has two age groups at which the first onset generally occurs — early to mid twenties and in the early thirties — thus helping to distinguish between simple phobias in child and adolescent years.[6]
In response to a traumatic event, anxiety may interrupt the formation of memories and disrupt the learning processes, resulting in dissociation. Depersonalization (a feeling of disconnection from one’s self) and derealisation (a feeling of disconnection from one's surroundings) are other dissociative methods of withdrawing from anxiety.[7]

reference for final film

I decide to make this style of animation film. So what I need to do now is find more reference. As I didn't watch much sick and bloody video before. The first one in my mind is Happy Tree Friend.

the message of spike and mike, sick and twisted festival

I found a video that introduce Spike and Mike, sick and twisted fesival.

inspiration of final film-character and motion

character reference-from The Triplets Of Belleville
I found that so many fat guys in the animation film named The Triplets Of Belleville. In the part I upload below, characters are all fat and special looking. By the way, the style of this film is like old film. I like the tone of the film.

 look at the swallowing

sick and twisted-from wikipedia

sick and twisted-what I want to show in my film-useful for essay as well

Spike and Mike's Festival of Animation
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spike_and_Mike's_Festival_of_Animation

It's a kind of animation festival, and most of the animation films in this festival are about sick and twisted (as I showed before). My short film tends to show similar thing as these films.

research- style, colour for my final film

I found the website. Oh¬Yeah
http://www.trashpack.com/en-au/products/collection-packs/

attatch some pictures here. I have seen the trash pack for a long time, but I haven't found it. Now I get it!
I think the colour is useful to me, as my short film is about junk food. Actually, I don't want to make the junk food in my film look like tasty, I want to make it messy.

inspirations for final film

what I want:
exaggeration, crazy story, extraodinary style, disney style movement (12 principles)
key words of my short film:
a man, fat, liles to eat junk food, lazy,

After I decide my story, I recalled animation films that I have watched before; and then find if I can get some idea from them.

1)Magic--story
In this film, I got some ugly scene that bloody and violent. Actually, I hope some parts of my film can have similar effect.

2) Happy Tree Friend-story, colour
The moment that when the green character put the blue one into the grill I can use as reference in my film.

3) Battle of Food--story
Each kind of food has its own weapon. In my short film, the junk food will has its own style to arrest the man.

4) Empty Roll-style
It's a quite simple animation film. But I like the style. I'm thinking whether I can use this style to show my story or not.

5) LUPO THE BUTCHER-character (mouth)
This short film includes both humour and bloody elements. I think the character's mouth is distinctive which I can put in my film as reference. His teeth are ugly and messy. If a man always eat a lot, his teeth will possibly like that, which will happen in the character of my film.

synopsis of the final film-- we eat them or they eat us

What I want to say in my film
Message:
-- keep a healthy life style.
topic:
--We eat them or they eat us?
What I like to show in my film?
Humour, exaggeration, craziness, little bloody, violent
synopsis
The man not only use his hands, but also use his tongue. His tongue can come out from his nose, mouth, ears and eyes and it can hold food themselves.
He is so lazy that he open his belly and put food into his belly directly. Suddenly, he feels the temperature of the room is so high and his arms and belly emerge some blister.
What’s more, all of the furniture became junk food.
Cabinet-- hotdog;  carpet—pizza;  sofa—ice-cream;  curtain—chips;  bookcase—sandwich;  DVD– sweets;  TV—cheese;  tissue—pop corn;
Then all the junk food and rubbish attack him at the same time. He stands in the corner of the room then run outside, go to downstairs. Rubbish and junk food became a shock wave still attack him.
At last, he was stuck by the door and cannot go outside. The man was covered by rubbish and junk food.
(not sure do I need this part or not) Then zoom out, the door is a mouth of hamburger, and the shock wave is the tongue of hamburger. The man was eaten by the house( hamburger). Finally, the hamburger became the original shape-house, and hiccups, spit a skull.

reference for my violence and blood

Matthew, you'd better not watch these videos below. They are all bloody and violent.

1) Blood Bath
I can use the moment that blood come out like spring as reference in my story. My story has a moment that each blister explode when the temperature of the room became so high. I think when the blister explode, blood will come out like this movie.

2) The Flying Eye
In my story, when the man use his tongue that comes out from his eyes, the shape of eyes can like the eye in the movie.

3)  Laughing Deer
Look at furnitures in the movie. All of them laugh like they have life. In my film, I have one scene that all the furnitures become junk food and attack the character.

Happy notes to the second presentation

I'm so happy that Matthew said my story can reflect the message, although he doesn't like bloody and violent film.
I can carry on working now.
By the way, I can't connect internet for more then 3 days at home, that is really a bad experience. How can a 21century person leave internet!!!

Feed back
Matthew doesn't like horrible film, but he said I can do it if I like it. My story reflects the message well. He suggest me do a cut in my story as Lewys suggested. Just begin with the man became fat; play computer games; eat a lot. At last, Mat suggests me if I can try different way rather than 2D drawn animation, as it is not easy to show my story in 2D hand drawn animation.

My target
1) decide the script;
2) create storyboard;
3) do animatic;
4) I'd like to put violent and bloody things in my film, but it is only a way to reflect my story and my message. Don't lost in bloody and violent.

Learn from other students
Lewis
1) I quite like his reference of UP.
2) All of his characters are started with the same shape. The same shape, but different details. I think it is a good way to create different characters in one film.

Lewys
1) He puts most of his work on his blog and his blog is really funny, so I can always get inspiration from his blog. Like this time, I found the link of disney's storyboard is really useful.
Lewys, Can I add them on my blog?
2) He put his storyboard on the wall, then see how it flows. I think it's a good way to test my storyboard. I can learn from him; put storyboard on the wall; perform it shot by shot; and then adjust the order until find the best way to show story.
3) I like the colour of his logo--the fly
4) His animatic mainly reflect the lady's movement and simplify the background. I think it is a good way to show our story at the first step. We can use simple drawings to show what's happening in each shot. Then detailed them. For me, I think it is easier to use drawings (even they are rough)  to show my story than use words.

Agnes
1) I can find so many creative things in her blog.  The video showed below is from her blog. It is an excellent example for real person and cartoon transformation.

2) When I saw this video( showed below) in her blog, I found combine stop-motion with real person is a good way.

concept art

When I am thinking the story of my final film, these poses always come into my brain. So I record them, maybe these poses can help me think out interesting story. Sometimes, concept art will give me inspiration.

rough concept of the room
deformation that I will use in my story

My character-concept art
I try to use different materiel-soft pastel
soft pastel-concept background
I try to use photoshop draw background, but I feel when I hold the tablet pen, my mind is stopped. So strange. I think I can have more freedom in photoshop, but it's not.

The man pull his intestinal.

Next I use several pictures to show what I want to do in my film. It's just a part. If my story can work, I will draw storyboard.

I found an interesting book named Lost and Found, by Oliver Jeffers. I like water colour style in thie book. Each picture use simple shape and light colour to show story.
By the way, I found Oliver Jeffers' website is great as well. http://www.oliverjeffers.com/

Notes - from The art of Monsters, inc

The colour script defines the mood of each scene in the film through the use of light, colour, and atmosphere.

That was somthing we definitely learned with Sullivan: It's pretty design a charater unless you know who he is. Otherwise, you don't have anything on which to hang your design. Like Sullivan, he was the most difficult to design because his part in the story changed many times as it evolved. So when we do our animation film, we need to know what is our character looks like; we need to know their characteristic; we need to think of our characters like a real person who stand near us.

There is this wonderful cycle of inspiration, traveling via drawings, betwwen the story and art departments, each inspiring the other.

Carry On-ideas

Lewis suggests me some crazy film, I got some ideas from them although I feel so scared!!!

1)Im A Cyborg But Thats Ok - Shooting scene
My charater can be crazy like her!

I found an interesting web-for better or for worse comic strip

for better or for worse comic strip
http://www.fborfw.com/

Carry On-ideas

1)   Destino - Salvador Dalí and Walt Disney and Arvo Pärt
Lewys suggests me some short films. Suddenly, I found that I can have some inspiration from famous paintings.  Analyse how can they explain their ideas in a less obvious way.
Two or more pictures in the same painting.

2) Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs
wow`` I just thought why not make my inside backgroung by hamburgers and other junk food while outside background by salad and running shoes , then I saw this amazing short film.

3)Waking Life Official
ok, I don't know why I share this film, I just feel the style is so different. All the things in the film are shaking like wave``` crazy

4)Yellow Submarine
I saw this film few years ago. I don't like the story of this film. Actually I don't think there is a story of this film. But when I watch it now, I really moved by its imagination. OH` My belly can eat food itself!!
How they express their mind by shapes```

5)A Scanner Darkly
Maybe the man in my film at last, take off his technic hat that can show future time in his brain. He feels terrible. But luckily, it's just showed in the machine, he can change it from now on. So he threw all his junk food away, use healty food instead.
I can add some silly parts in my story. For example, the man use his tongue to take food, and his tongue can go outside from his mouse, ears, eyes and nose.( so many tongues do the same thing at the same time)
Maybe the man became fat fat, then became a chiken drumstick or a hamburger.

6) Paprika
I quite like the moment that the man run from a deformation space. The place is collapsing, the man is running away. Maybe the room in my film expand too much and nearly explode, so the man run away, but he is so fat that was stuck by the door. Maybe there is a hamburger shock wave, so the man go out of the door by the wave. Then he takes off his hat (the technic machine can see the future), back to real life. Throw away all the junk food.```

7) Afro-Samurai
violent and bloody```

8)Fantasia (1940)

OH` Maybe junk food (hamburbers etc.) can move thenselves. They have life, they perform themslves.

Ideas-before going to sleep

1) When the man stuck in the door, he found his neighbor on the opposite, right, left side are all stuck by their door. Then zoom out, the whole earth expand too much and nearlly explode.

2) When the man stuck by the door, he found the outside world became a junk food world. It's full of hamburgers, potato chips, etc. People in the street became chiken drumsticks. Then the scene goes back to the real world, we saw a scared face, the man took off his technic hat, clean up his house.

3) When the man stuck by the door, zoom out with laughing. Large numbers of audiences watch movie in the cinema, and what's happening before are the story of the film. But the audience are all huge. Maybe when they leave the cinema, they will find that they are stuck by the door. ha~ha~ha~

great example

I found an animation film that use simple pictures and story to show a deep message.
Here is the animation---
El empleo (Extract) - FIPRESCI Award 2009
I watch it from other place, so I can't show the whole film.  What I can see from this film is everyone is a tool that used by other people, we use others while at the same time, we are used by them.
All of the furniture in the film are human. For example, the lamp, mirror, chair, desk, taxi, clothes stand, traffic light, lift, etc. The man use them normally, while at last he was used by other people as carpet. We are employee. The last scene of the film shows that the "lamp man" throw his lamp hat away, leave the place--maybe it is a portent that we human will leave the employee world one day.

reference for my crazy!!--part 2

Lewys gave me a website, I like the character showed in the website and games.

http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/

7)Chump And Clump

I really like the performance of this short film. Look at characters' expression!!! Much better than words.

8)I Live in the Woods!
http://vimeo.com/14191230
Some thing violent in this film. Bloody!

9)Mac 'n' Cheese
The moment that slim man breath sth in his nose, the feeling became crazy.

10) Bill Plympton's film
What's in Bill's head???---CRAZY always crazy
horn dog

guide dog
simple story but express a strong message, show exaggeration in the film.

Bill's Dirty Shorts (Trailer)
What do we usually think about sea? Look at what Bill thinks``` Naughty+crazy man

Think something in an unusual way

Some Joker

why Bill can express one thing in a so crazy way? I will never think of it if I didn't watch his film.
oh! It can be happend like that---that is my feeling when I watch his film.

11) Tex Avery
Why audiences will laugh when they watch this animation? How can I make people laugh? How can I add humour in my film?

12) Robert Crumb Laughing Rag
Seperate our head, what's inside?--

My idea:--Maybe the character seperate his own body, we can see what's inside, Maybe he opened his Intestine, take food in it to eat.

references for my crazy!

I ask Lewys for help, find some crazy, exaggerate or silly animation film.
Thank you so much Lewys.

1)Harvie Krumpet

2) haha~~I like this one.  Tiny Chainsaw
How can we think of a chansaw in our trousers. It did! Crazy Crazy~~

3)Ormie the Pig
So funny! Amazing performance.
Suddenly, I found it's a good example for taxonomies.

4) oh~I like the style and hope I can do similar one

5)  La morve
silly~silly~silly.

6)Full Adventure Time Episode
Movement (the funny way of the man running, dancing```) can be used as reference. Character of this film is very simple, maybe I can use it in my final film.

Notes after tutorial with Leonie

What I have showed before are cases that I can learn, but in my own film, I need to know what I want to say.
1) I quite like to bring humour, exaggeration, craziness in my film. So I'd better establish the craziness of the "world" in my film.
I have some crazy ideas in my story at the moment (like the man is stuck by the door, he became thin outside while fat inside), but only part of the story is. Leonie suggests me to make the other sensible parts became exaggerate and crazy. Make a whole crazy film!!!
(maybe people go thin outside and fat inside```maybe outside is made of salad+running shoes and inside of hamburger+computer```)
2) I need to express my message which is keeping a healty life style in final film.
3) I had better to use less obvious way to show my story.
4) I gave my character a reason for staying at home ( online chatting, junk food), and gave him a reason for going outside (rope snapped, he needs to go outside for his food). But both of them are weak. I'd better to give him a strong reason that stay at home or go outside. Keep it crazy.

result:
Leonie gave me some suggestions for helping me open my eyes.
1) Maybe the girl on the internet is also fat and stuck by the door, at that moment they saw each other. they are both lying to each other online (slim or sexy photo)
2) Maybe they meet outside in a paradise of salad.
3) They both want to get back to their computers to "talk" to each other, don't realise they are neighbour and could be happy together outside.
4) Love as a force for change. Love yourself, love your body, love your health. (quite like an advertisement)
Think out more crazy, exaggerate or silly things that will be happen in my story and then list them. Talk with Leonie next time. Maybe we can connect each part then create a strong story.

PS:
Thank you so much, Leonie. You spent more than an hour to help me think of my story.

Notes after tutorial with Leonie

What I saw in this film is really a very simple story and simple characters. But it express a strong message. It includes metaphor in the simple story. What I want to show is quite different style animation film, but I can  learn storytelling from it-- less obvious way.

ideas of my final film-after tutorial with Leonie

What's happening of my storyboard are interesting, but the story is so weak. Some parts of my the movements can be used, they are quite funny, but I need to make my story stronger.

Notes:
1) Usually, the hero wants something, but what does he really need? How do I shape the story, so that he learns what he needs more than what he wants.
Nina Shorina-Door
We had better do something in a correct way, but we always do it in a wrong way, what control us? For example, we can see in this stop-motion film, after a long time compression, people forget how to go upstairs by the normal way, they use several way to do that. The old thing occupy his mind. This film give character reason of why they do that. I should do it in my own film. Give my character a reason for going outside, and do a comparison for inside world and outside world.

take photoes for my final film background
